How to pay in Italy

You’re coming to Italy for your holidays and you’re wondering how to pay in shops and restaurants: credit card or cash? What if they refuse my card?

Here’s a little guide that will help you figure out how to pay in Italy!

Italy is a mix. There’s no general rule on how to pay and why.

You will have no problem using credit/debit cards in supermarkets, pharmacies and bigger stores (with the exception of American Express cards, which are not so common here). The same is true for stuff more expensive than 20€.

While electronic payments are mandatory in Italy you might have some issues with smaller shops. They’ll probably try to refuse electronic payments if the amount is lower than 20€.

Note that bars, news stands, hairdressers and market stalls will almost always refuse cards.

Same for anything owned by chinese people… And tips. Remember, tips should always be given in cash.

Go around with 30/40€ in 20/10/5€ notes and some coins.

It should be enough to cover most of the inconveniences you might have!
